Sometimes the most surprisingly best meals are ones you get to adventure alone and fully emmerse yourself in the flavors and ambiance a venue offers. M Two is the newest rebirth of what was once Saba Blue Water Cafe on 4th st — and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who inquires; Just be prepared to pay for good eats and ambiance. Definitely a happy hour watering hole, but I can see them dimming the lights, throwing in some lounge music, and being able to get close with a missus on swank couches alit from umbrella lights.

The Seared Scallops were AMAZING, and the peruvian chile added just a flavor of spice without the burn.

Located in Houston on Bellaire just east of Beltway 8, Banana Leaf is one of the best Malay places I’ve been to eat in a long time!  They boast a kitchen of ONLY malaysian chefs and all of their items made in house. Price wise, dishes are relatively around the $10 range, and I spent about $20 on myself (hey, I’m a fatty that’s happy. Lemme alone)

Korea House

If you go to 1 korean place in Austin, it HAS to be Korea House. On Anderson st just west of Burnet, it’s tucked away in the back of the shopping strip sharing a mall with the Alamo drafthouse, a yogurt shop and multiple gyms and holistic venues. Favorite dish without a doubt is the beef bulgogi, and if you at least 2 orders, you have the option to sit at a grill, and cook it your way :) Know another great thing? All the sides they bring you with your bulgogi!

24 Diner pt deux

So good, it deserves a 2ndary mention! (To read the 1st one, go here: http://gimmenomnom.com/2010/04/12/24-diner/)

New to the scene of late night druken eats comes 24 Diner! Located on the north west corner of lamar and 6th st in Austin, the diner is home to some of the tastiest treats I’ve had (alcohol induced or otherwise). Their meatloaf is better than my last meatloaf favorite (Hoover’s) and their chicken and waffles (though not brined like Luck Js) w chocolate syrup is definitely worth a try!

Frank’s

A new comer to the warehouse scene is Frank’s: A scrumptuous purveyor of pork and all of it’s tasty buddies :)   Located on Colorado between 5th and 4th next to Cuba Libre and thePhoenix, its price point is actually what you would expect of warehouse district, though capped at reasonability (ranging around $4 to 8 depending). Their dogs have some of the most interesting concepts I’ve tried (the Chicago and slaw dogs are delish, and I fell in love with the Jackalope) They also have daily specials which are pretty dope! I got to try their Notorios P.I.G and a BACON CUPCAKE!  I really recommend grabbing their lil smokie corn dog bites($4 more) or their chili cheese waffle fries ($6, but this is enough to fill you, even if shared).

El Taquito

Simply for me the BEST lil taco joint off of Riverside, I enthusiastically bring all my friends here after a late night of … chatting, and …watching other people drink :)

If you’re heading south on i-35, exit Riverside, make a left, and there’s a snall little road on your right after you pass the Jack-in-the-box, but before you get to Parker ln./Arena dr.

Paggi House

Located just past the bridge going south on Lamar, tucked away on a side road going east on Riverside dr, Paggi House is a jewel of fine cuisine amidst Austin’s quirky snacking goodness.

Reservations went smoothly, actually they were able to seat me before my reservation time.  The bartender on their outside patio was fully knowledgeable about their LARGE variety of drinks, and actually turned me onto my now favorite bottle of scotch: Lagavulin 16.  It has a great smokey aftertaste and the flavors really open up if you add 3 or so ice cubes to the top of it!

So onto the food!

To start off I had the Lobster Bisque, though was highly tempted to go off the Restaurant week menu and sample their Veal Sweatbreads (truffled brioche, fava beans w/ sherry vinegar cream).  The Bisque was richly balanced, not too much cream, and the diced asian pears in it add a delightful texture change & sweetness.

Next was the Mero Sea Bass. Being sake roasted, had a nice crist texture on the outside, but the inside litterally melted in my mouth, and the wilted spinach and campari tomatoes were a great pairing for their miso sauce.

As great of a meal I’ve had so far, I had to cap it off sweetly, so I ordered their homemade bread pudding.  Was topped off with various berries, and a scoop of expresso icecream.  I pair this with a small serving of Moscato (a very sweet dessert wine that goes well IMO with anything with starch content).

All in all, the dinner was exquisite, the waiting staff catered to my every request, and the food was amazing.  I only wish restaurant week was restaurant month so I could come back for more!

Until next time,
David
